A mixed voice choir called The Verlis Singers with working class backgrounds started by a tall, wild and charismatic bible-thumping Cornishman called Isaac Grenfell in the 50s. A choir that has influenced the lives of hundreds of singers yet at his 2002 memorial service in Verlis Cathedral, the Grenfell clan decree NO mention of the famous choir he started. Long serving choir member and baritone Len Fyfield leads the singing of a hymn Deep Harmony as the coffin is carried out. Deep Harmony has its roots in Wesleyan chapels and is the official “anthem” of The Verlis Singers. It is sung at the start of every choir rehearsal as well as on sad and happy choir occasions. No-one really knows why.
In his 25 years conducting choirs, Bath-based music man Grenville Jones has seen singers fall in love,
fall out …. and fall over - after a particularly enjoyable choir social! Grenville lifts the lid on choir life in
his first novel available from Amazon. If you sing in a choir, you will not want to miss it. Now with the final chapter added.

Is Verlis actually TRURO?
Heather Strong conducted The Verlis Singers after founder conductor Isaac Grenfell was forced out. She was asked to leave after 8 years. Here she is talking to Gavin James, the third conductor in the history of the famous Cornish Choir called, The Verlis Singers:
‘I hear on the grapevine that the Verlis Male Choir is in turmoil again. Another committee bust up I think. They withdrew from the male voice class a month ago. Time to start your own new Cornwall Male Choir Gavin perhaps? That’s the trouble with committees isn’t it? The people you want to be on them are too nice and can’t be fussed, so you end up with the obnoxious people who just want to spout off and cause trouble.’
